How to measure diy custom made wardrobes
Accurate measurements are vital to ensure your new wardrobes fit perfectly. Fortunately, obtaining accurate measurements is easy if you follow the steps outlined in this guide.
Requirements
- Tape measure
- Pen / pencil
- Measure form (PDF download)
- Preferable: roofing square (helps determine out‑of‑square walls)
Measure Form
We have prepared the following form which will assist you with measuring your wardrobes:
Step 1: Measure the width of the back wall
When measuring the width of the back wall, take the measurement at approximately 2000mm (2 metres) up from the floor. Follow these steps:
- From one side, measure out to 1000mm (1 metre) and make a small mark.
- From the opposite side, measure the distance to the 1000mm mark.
By adding these two measurements together, you’ll get a highly accurate width.
Step 2: Measure the depth of the opening
Measure both the left and right hand depths. Record the measurements on the form.
Step 3: Measure any side returns (if applicable)
It’s important that we know the measurements of side returns, as this may affect the placement of drawers.
Step 4: Measure door height
Measure the height of the existing door opening. This will determine the depth of the top shelf.
